Jonathan Gaetke: Introduction to Oils (Painting the Grisaille)
4 session workshop: Jan 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th

This class is geared towards adult students.  Artist Jonathan Gaetke believes painting is a skill anyone can learn. Working from direct observation, students will be introduced to basic oil painting skills while learning the grisaille method. Emphasis will be placed on representational painting elements such as drawing, values, edges and composition. Demonstration, exercises and individual instruction at your easel in a fun and supportive environment will provide a solid foundation to create believable works of art in oil. Class size is limited to no more than 10 students.

Ardella Swanberg: Beginning Watercolor
8 session workshop: Feb 6th, 13th, 27th, Mar 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th, Apr 3rd 1pm to 4pm
Cost: $185.00
This class is for the person who wants to learn the basics.  I teach the way a painter makes art.  You will learn to use your own ideas for paintings.  A list of needed supplies will be provided before the class starts.  Topics to be covered are:
Lesson 1 -- You will learn how to select and use tools and materials.  There will time to practice using wet on wet, dry on wet and interesting additions to the paint such as salt and glycerin
Lesson 2 – You will learn how to mix paint to get the color you want.  You will make your own color wheel and learn how to use it.  You will try out several color schemes.
Lesson 3 -- You will learn how to plan your painting and how the elements of design (line, shape, value, color, and shape) are used in art.  You will paint a painting from your own photo or sketch.
Lesson 4 – We will paint a still life from a display we make.
Lesson 5 -- After a demonstration of how to paint water, you will try painting a wave or a waterfall using new techniques.
Lesson 6—You will learn about the principles of design and apply them to a painting from your own photo or sketch or by using your own photo.
Lesson 7 – After a demonstration of how to paint a portrait in watercolor, you will paint on from a sketch I provide.
Lesson 8 – You will learn how to save a bad painting by using the elements and principles of art and more paint.

Hilda Vandergriff: Chinese Brush Painting Workshop

Have you ever wanted to earn how to paint using Chinese Brush Painting Techniques?  Join Artist, Hilda Vandergriff, for a fun learning experience.  You will be learning century old techniques of the orient.  Simple brush strokes you can use for fish, lotus leaves, bamboo, calligraphy word for fish and backgrounds too.  You will receive a lesson handout and follow along the demo step by step.

White felt cloth for laying down the Sumi paper to paint on
2 water containers (one for watercolors and one for black ink)

Judy Gittelsohn: Golden Acrylic Painting Advanced Workshop
Sat. April 29th 10am-4pm
Fee: $125
Participants will explore a range of Golden products and we will paint all day!  The day will be divided into three parts:  1. Using and understanding gels to build texture and create interesting surfaces.  2. Layering and blending to develop intense, rich and surprising colors.  3. Applying Golden Glazing medium for a final glaze.  Artists will experience drizzle, drip, and grit.  Examples of mediums to be used:  clear tar gel, self leveling gel, coarse molding paste, fiber paste, glass bead gel and more. With this hands-on experience to delight or inspire, the participants will work intensely on creating an artwork incorporating these techniques and materials.  The paints will be Golden Heavy Body, Golden Fluid and Golden High Flow.  I will offer prompts and suggestions on materials and concepts during the day. All levels are welcome!  All materials except canvas provided.  Please bring a canvas / purchase one from Art Central. You are welcome to bring additional brushes, although some will be available for your use.

Arches 140 lb. watercolor paper (The size we will be working on is 11” x 15”)
The watercolor paper must be stapled down to a watercolor board.
Instructions to prepare the paper will be emailed by instructor.
Watercolor palette with mixing area or white plate
Instructor will be using the following colors:  Ultra Marine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Perm Rose, New Gamboge, Sap Green and Payne’s Grey
Water container for washing brushes of colors
A small spray water bottle
Paper Towels (Viva or Brawny)
Pencil, Pen and Eraser

 

Ardella Swanberg: Book Making

People say that the book is going out.  But for artists and writers it will always be important for practicing and keeping their ideas.  Learn how to make a small sketchbook or journal starting with the pages.  In this 4-hour workshop, you will learn to sew the pages together, and make a cover and finish the book.

David Limrite: “Pushing Charcoal” Mixed Media Drawing, Process, and The Artist

Ardella Swanberg: Advancing in Watercolor

After learning the basics of painting, you need to learn more about how to make an outstanding composition.  This class leads you beyond copying photos and paintings into your own vision with unusual color schemes, design, and abstraction in easy to understand steps. Use your own photographs and drawings for originality.  The classes will cover planning a painting, elements and principles of art, color theory, lively whites, designing with collage, value patterns, and how to save a painting. These principles will help to have your paintings accepted into competitions.

Lesson 1: Materials and planning a painting
Assignment:  In class plan a painting using these steps. Bring it to the next class for critique. Also bring your own photo of a landscape.
Lesson 2: The Elements and Principles of Art.
Assignment:  You will use negative painting to enhance a painting.  Bring that painting and your own photo of any subject to the next class.
Lesson 3: Apply color theory.
Assignment: design a painting that uses a color scheme that you would never have tried before.  Bring the painting to the next class.
Lesson 4: Lively whites in a still life.
Assignment:  Plan and paint a painting of a white still life in class. Finish and bring it for critique the next week.  Also bring your own photo and some textures that you find in magazines, origami, or textiles.
Lesson 5:  Using collage to work out design concepts.
Assignment: Make your own painting using your collage as inspiration. Bring your own photo of shadows of plants or trees to the next class.
Lesson 6: Finding interesting value patterns
Assignment: Use one of your value sketches to make a painting. Look at paintings by Cezanne.
Lesson 7: Abstraction
Assignment: Make a painting in the style of Cezanne.  Bring a painting to the next class that you think is so bad that you want to throw it away.
Lesson 8: Saving a poor painting. Assignment: Fix a bad painting.

 

Mary Lou Johnson: Introduction to the Basics of Italic Script Calligraphy
Saturday August 12th 10:30am to 3:30pm with 1 hour lunch break
Fee: $40 for 3 hour class
Suitable for beginners or tune up for Italic hand lettering.
Class members will learn basics of using a broad edge pen to produce the beautiful thick and thin patterns of the Italic Script or Italic Calligraphy. Several brands of ink will be available for use as well as 3 styles of broad edge pen; Speedball C-2, Felt tip 2.5mm and Pilot Parallel pen 2.4. Pen patterns, stroke families and the Italic "recipe" for letter height and angle will be introduced. Paper suitable for lettering will be on hand as well as tools to make future lettering projects much easier. Resources are listed on my website for future references.

Mary Lou Johnson: Funky Letters with Pilot Parallel Pens
Sunday August 13th 1 to 3pm
Fee: $30 for 2 hour class
Suitable for beginners or anyone who would like to add an informal lettering style to their art.
Class members will learn basics of using a broad edge Pilot Parallel pen to produce the bouncy, flourished strokes of the Funky Lettering style. This pen can skip, lift and roll to create amazing strokes. Any water-soluble ink, water color or walnut ink works with this pen in a continual stroke suitable for letters, drawing, pen patterns. I will be using Lisa Englebrecht's Funky letters featured in her book, Modern Calligraphy and Hand Lettering. Additional resources are listed on my website for future references.
Class materials list: Pilot Parallel Pen in size 2.4 mm or 3.8 mm, plus lots of copy paper for practice. Arches Text wove will be available for purchase and try outs. Leave the rules at the door and prepare to create your own alphabet!
